In China, Chinese call foreigners Laowai. After they come to US, Chinese still call non-Chinese, especially western people, Laowai. When I was in middle school, I went with my classmates to Wuhan where I met some Laowai visiting Guiyuansi (Guiyuan Buddhist Temple). They looked so different from us. I forgot who said "There are some Laowai". Then I knew that they had the same name, Laowai.
One day, when we ate at a Chinese restaurant in Los Angeles, an american guy came to buy lunch. One of us said "Laowai also eats Chinese food" The guy said "In this country, you are Laowao" IN CHINESE. We all laughed. |
