A Greek guy asked me how to say "good luck" in Chinese. I told him that it is Hao3 Yun4. He practiced again and again by himself to remember the pronunciation. After a while, I went to check how thing was going. He said "Hao3 Yun1" to me. I said that "Hao3 Yun1" means fainting. He was pleased that he learned another Chinese word. So he practiced both words and tried to compare their pronunciations. However, it is very difficult for Western people to distinguish Yun4 from Yun1 by pronunciation. As I have been confused by pronunciations of many English words, he was tortured by the two Chinese words.
Another Greek guy came and asked him what he was doing. He said:" 'Hao3 Yun4' makes me 'Hao3 Yun1'." All of us laughed. |
