The Old Summer Palace, Yuan Ming Yuan or the Gardens of Perfect Brightness, consisted of a group of palaces and gardens. Built in the 18th and early 19th centuries, it was originally called the Imperial Gardens. Before it was destroyed by British and French troops in 1860, the emperors of the Qing Dynasty had lived there to handle government affairs. It was famous for its extensive collection of gardens and building architectures full of arts.
