Since 2000, more than 200 contract research organizations (CROs) providing services to global pharmaceutical and biotech companies have been founded in China, most of which are founded by scientists and businessmen trained in US, Europe, and Japan. It is not a surprise because you can easily meet Chinese students and scholars in almost all laboratires in the US and Europe universities and institutes. In the past three decades, tens of thousands of Chinese students and scholars have been trained in US, Europe and Japan. Most of them are biologiests and Chemists. Because Chinese are smart and hard-working, in almost each issue of top scientific journals such as Nature, Science, and Cell, there are Chinese co-authors. Since 1990s, more and more Chinese scientists have been back to China to work in Academy and later industry for short or long terms. |

I frequently heard some Chinese ask "Do you have Guanxi in that department?", "Why do not you find a Guanxi to solve the problem?", and so on. Actually they even bring that to the Western culture, which sometimes brings them trouble. More and more foreigners know from different sources that Guanxi is important in China. Some people, especially some book or column authors, even believe that it is the first thing to know if one wants to do business in China because you will gain competetive advantages from a powerful Guanxi network. How important is it exactly in business and life in China? |

In 2000, some Chinese economists predicted nine most profitable businesses, most of which are related to the commerce industry, in China in the future: household electrical appliances, telecommunications sector, house interior decoration, the real estate sector, private cars and related businesses such as car maintenance and car washing, tourism, fast-food industry, and products for the elderly and women. In the past years, all of the predictions have become true. |

John from France said:"In Beijing I learned one important matter for doing business in China: inviting somebody to dinner, as well as being invited to dinner. " Many activities are done at the dinner table while eating - to exchange information, to do things, to share life, and so on. You may ask: Isnot the Internet very convenient? Is not there phone very common in China? Why not talk about business in your office? However, in China, businessmen are willing to "sit down and talk slowly" and prefer "face-to-face interaction". You may spend 2 to 3 hours in discussing or chatting, while eating, something more and more deeply. |
